Primary Stages Awardee

So Primary Stages recently announced two new initiatives to support new work through the pandemic and further diversify the field: Creative Access and Creative Development grant programs.

I’m thrilled to be an inaugural Creative Access Grantee. I was nominated by the National Black Theatre and will join Tyler Dobies (nominated by Pan Asian Repertory Theatre), Roger Q. Mason (nominated by National Queer Theater) and Justin Santory (nominated by Latinx Playwrights Circle).

Each of us will develop new work over the next year or so in association with Primary Stages and our nominating theaters.  This partnership approach seems like a promising way for Predominantly White Institutions to diversify their creative roster.

Alongside our program, 2021/22 Creative Development Grant recipients will be Zora HowardMatthew Paul OlmosJordan SeaveyCharly Evon Simpson, and Susan Soon He Stanton.

You know, I’ve been singing the blues lately. Plenty of rejection and a few set-backs on some key projects. It’s part of the course, and I’m already moving on.  But it’s important to take a breath sometimes and celebrate the wins. I’ve known about this program for a while, and we’re still figuring out what it means, but I want to celebrate all the same.  Sometimes I forget to do that.

Congratulations everyone!
